About Zero Carbon Cumbria
We recognise the urgency of reducing Cumbria’s greenhouse gas emissions and increasing carbon sequestration to address the impacts of the climate crisis. Severe flooding, heatwaves and other extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, making taking action now more important than ever.
Zero Carbon Cumbria is a hub for carbon reduction action, connecting people, businesses and communities, showcasing inspiring examples of local climate action, and empowering others to support the journey to net zero by tackling the issues that matter most locally: including warm, affordable homes, accessible public transport and thriving businesses.
The pathway to net zero
By working together, we can achieve our ambition of reaching net zero emissions by 2037 and create a cleaner, healthier and more resilient Cumbria for future generations. Delivering the pathway to net zero will not only help tackle climate change, but will also bring wider benefits including improved air quality, healthier communities, enhanced biodiversity, greater energy security, new green jobs and economic opportunities, and more sustainable ways of living and travelling.
Whether you’re an organisation that could participate in the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership, a community group that could link in with the Cumbria Sustainability Network, or an individual business or household looking for ways to cut your carbon footprint, Zero Carbon Cumbria is here to help.
The website is brought to you by the Zero Carbon Cumbria Partnership, which is steering carbon reduction at a strategic level in the county. The site is managed on the partnership’s behalf by Futureproof Cumbria, which co-chairs the partnership alongside the University of Cumbria. It’s supported by Westmorland and Furness Council, the Lake District National Park Authority and a number of other sponsors and funders having been initially developed with funding from the National Lottery until December 2025.
This support enables a range of activities to be delivered including support for the sector groups, support for the Cumbria Sustainability Network, climate and other training, youth and low carbon food programmes, marketing and communications, partnership meetings and events. There is currently a particular focus on the Westmorland and Furness area, while also driving and supporting climate action across Cumbria as a whole.
