Cumbrian Carrot Connections

Growing healthier futures

What if one simple vegetable could help sow the seeds of a healthier, stronger Cumbria?

Welcome to Cumbrian Carrot Connections — a new pilot project connecting local schools with local farmers, starting with one of our most humble heroes: the carrot.

This project invites Cumbrian schools to celebrate fresh, seasonal food grown right here on our doorstep. Through fun activities, farm visits, tastings, and classroom resources, children will learn about where their food comes from while supporting local farmers and making healthier choices.

Together, we can:

🥕 Bring learning to life through real-world food experiences

🥕 Support our local economy and proud farming traditions

🥕 Inspire the next generation to eat well and live sustainably

Let’s grow a brighter future, one carrot at a time.

VistaVeg

VistaVeg are a small team of growers based in and around Crosby Ravensworth near Shap. They have been growing veg since 2008 and lead the Home Grown Here veg box scheme project.

The team grows fruit and veg on their own holdings and work together on a communal 0.9 acre no-dig field, orchard and five polytunnels.

They use sustainable methods to grow their fruit and veg – but what does it mean to grow sustainably?

  • handpicking produce
  • using permanent no-dig beds in fields and a no-dig system in polytunnels
  • not using any chemicals on crops
  • using green and animal manures
  • keep waste and food miles to a minimum – including picking wonky veg, some of which goes to consumers, some of which goes to market
  • use little, no or non-plastic packaging
  • use more renewable resources in the production, processing, transport and storage of produce

As well as the environmental benefits of VistaVeg’s model, it is also s a grower’s co-operative. This means it is owned and controlled by its members, so growers, packers, delivery drivers and admin staff all have a say in how it’s run.

Richard Crayston

Based at Gascow Farm, Ulverston, Richard has been growing veg on a large scale (120 acres planned for 2025) for over twelve years. He was one of the first farmers to respond to the call out for growers to join the Home Grown Here project, and he has been working closely with VistaVeg since the beginning.

Richard grows carrots, potatoes, onions, parsnips and beetroot to supply the Home Grown Here veg box scheme throughout the year.
