Energy Efficient Self Build – a client’s perspective

Thu 17 October, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A 2-hour session with Robert, sharing his experience building an energy-efficient, single-storey timber self-build and Diane Hubbard of Green Footsteps conducting a live airtightness test demonstration, answering questions about energy efficiency for your project.

What began as a simple lock-down project to replace a barn quickly grew into an ambitious build featuring a utility room, workshop, store, and 1-bedroom ancillary accommodation. Designed by John Coward Architects and self-built by the project’s enthusiastic yet inexperienced owner, the vision for this structure took a surprising turn in late 2023 after an inspiring encounter with a distant cousin, a passive house expert from the USA, followed by a coffee with Diane Hubbard of Green Footsteps Ltd in January 2024.

With the structure nearly complete, the decision was made to push the boundaries—aiming to make the build super airtight and drastically reduce heating needs. Through persistence (and a lot of learning), the one-bedroom house recently achieved an impressive x0.5 ach/hr score in an airtightness test, thanks to Diane’s guidance and the owner’s sheer determination.

Join us to hear the story of a build that was transformed from “just average” to an airtight success—designed and advised by experts, achieved by a self-builder, Roberts says “If I can do it, anyone can!”

Come along for an inspiring and humorous look at this journey of self-discovery, resilience, and the quest for a low energy house.

The address and parking details will be made available by email to those attending.
