Site Visit – Work-in-progress: new build Passivhaus in Eskdale, Cumbria
Thu 9 February @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
See first hand a highly energy efficient house being built in Eskdale. This two bed lodge is constructed from cellulose-filled structural insulated panels, clad in larch with metal sheet roofing. The ventilation system ducting has been installed. The floor is screeded. Additional internal insulation is mostly in place. First fix electrics and plumbing are underway. This is a working site, so you’ll be asked to sign a disclaimer on arrival.
Now is a good time to see some of the key things that make it work, such as the airtightness detailing – taping of joints and sealing around ducts and pipes that go through the walls and floor and the careful attention to detail – before it is all covered up by internal finishes. Consider the trade-offs made between the shape and orientation, insulation thicknesses and airtightness. The hosts are happy to answer questions on practicalities and discuss their choices of MVHR, heat pump and hot water tank, and optimised solar and battery system (though these are not yet installed).
The hosts are planning a second open day later in the year once the building is complete and everything is up and running.
