Ambleside Action for a Future
Ambleside Action for a Future (AAFAF) is a network of local residents working together to mitigate climate and environmental breakdown and build community resilience. It is a registered charity. It holds regular meetings, often featuring guest speakers, and has a presence at local events, such as Ambleside Sports and the Christmas Lights, in order to engage the community.
AAFAF members have formed several sub-groups to work on various projects, including:
- A group developed a carbon calculator tool which allows residents to see how they could reduce their carbon footprint in terms of energy, travel, food and waste.
- A Community Energy group developed the Solar Made Easy project in partnership with Cumbria Action for Sustainability, to encourage local people to install solar panels. This project is now being rolled out in other communities.
- A Warmer Homes group carries out thermal imaging surveys and provides information, along with suggestions, to help residents insulate and draught proof their homes to save energy.
- A Growing and Biodiversity group gets involved in tree planting and maintenance, has created a wild flower meadow, and encourages members of the community to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers through events and knowledge sharing. It is currently involved in a project funded by the National Lottery to map local habitats and engage the community as a basis for further tree planting and habitat restoration.
- A Transport group aims to reduce emissions by encouraging a shift from car use to active travel and public transport.
- A Water group is involved in monitoring water pollution above and below the local sewage works, and liaising with other groups concerned about water quality in local rivers and lakes, including Windermere.
- A Lobbying group puts pressure on government, businesses and other organisations to adopt more climate-friendly policies and sustainable practices.
- Two creative workshops were organised for local children, to help them consider environmental issues including climate change.
