This year’s Great Big Green Week proved once again that community action can make a real difference. Held from 6-14 June under the theme Together for Good, the UK-wide celebration of climate and nature action inspired people across Cumbria to come together, learn new skills and take practical steps towards a greener future.

More than 80 events took place across the county, with 37 projects receiving support from Westmorland and Furness Council. Funded activities attracted over 2,060 participants and helped recruit at least 115 new volunteers, strengthening local efforts to tackle climate change and protect nature.

From community gardens, repair cafés and clothes swaps to wildlife surveys, litter picks and creative workshops, events highlighted how environmental action can also support wellbeing, reduce living costs and bring people together. Many projects successfully engaged children, young people, refugees, people with disabilities and families facing financial challenges, ensuring climate action remained inclusive and accessible.

A key theme throughout the week was collaboration. New groups were launched, lasting partnerships were formed and existing initiatives gained fresh volunteers and momentum. As Great Big Green Week continues to grow, it is helping make climate and nature action a normal, positive part of community life across Cumbria.
