Save the date! Great Big Green Week 2024 8 – 16 June

Plan ahead for summer greenery …

Sunshine, flowers and leafy green may seem a long way away, but the county’s climate change charity – Cumbria Action for Sustainability – are urging groups to get involved in planning for Great Big Green Week which will take place from the 8th – 16th of June this year.

Great Big Green Week is a national initiative coordinated by the Climate Coalition as a way of raising awareness of climate change and the biodiversity crisis, and getting more people involved in supporting nature and taking action to reduce their carbon footprint.

Says Cumbria Sustainability Network Coordinator, Helen Attewell, ‘We’d love communities and organisations across Cumbria to get involved in celebrating Great Big Green Week this year to create as big a splash as possible. It’s a great vehicle to reach out and involve more people, recruit volunteers, raise awareness and build morale. The earlier we start planning, the more interest we can generate, and in this election year it’s important that as many people as possible are talking about climate and nature.

‘Last year over 70 groups throughout Cumbria got involved with a huge range of activities from planting for pollinators, wildlife walks, films, talks, litter picks, compost demonstrations, citizen’s science training, music and performance, visual arts projects, games and family activities, learning about energy saving tips and solar panels, swap shops, repair cafes, upcycling and so much more.’

Not-for-profit groups can apply for support from the CAfS’ Community Climate Grants at any time to plan carbon cutting activities Zero Carbon Cumbria – Community Climate Grants – CAfS.  South Lakes locality board in Westmorland and Furness has already awarded £2,500 to support Great Big Green Week activities in their area, and CAfS is awaiting the outcome of funding bids elsewhere to support groups who require extra resources to organise an event.

Please register an interest with helen.attewell@cafs.org.uk if you would like to take part in Great Big Green Week this year, and we will keep you updated with news of training, promotional materials and funding opportunities.
